5 reasons not to miss the Sardine Run on the KZN South Coast

The change in season is an exciting time on the KwaZulu-Natal South Coast, with the cooler temperatures bringing the annual marine phenomenon – the Sardine Run! This annual spectacle is a treat for visitors to the region, making winter the ultimate getaway on the KZN South Coast.

Dr Ryan Daly, marine scientist at Oceanographic Research Institute, says they’re hoping for another good Sardine Run this year: “We have had relatively good runs over the past few years and I expect this coming year to be the same. The timing and size of the run can be influenced by so many factors – from sea temperature to sardine stock size and more – so it’s difficult to predict, but we will be monitoring the situation closely and keeping visitors updated on the progress.”

Dr Vusumuzi Sibiya, CEO of South Coast Tourism and Investment Enterprise, says the tourism sector is ready to welcome the influx of visitors keen to experience the Sardine Run first-hand: “Our Blue Flag beaches and year-round subtropical climate means that, even in winter, the KZN South Coast is a great holiday getaway – and the Sardine Run makes it extra special.

“For first-time visitors, we want to share some of the reasons this is an event not to be missed. Now’s the time to plan your Sardine Run getaway!”

1. It’s a world-famous phenomenon

The Sardine Run is known as The Greatest Shoal on Earth because of the breathtaking vision of billions of silver sardines migrating along the coastline – attracting a feeding frenzy of predators, among them seabirds, sharks, dolphins and whales. It’s been the feature of many internationally made wildlife documentaries, and is unlike any other migration across the planet.

2. Experience once-in-a-life marine encounters

While the sardines are impressive in themselves, the sheer volume of marine life that accompanies them makes this an unmissable ocean event. Hungry seabirds dive from the skies, including gannets, terns and cormorants – making this a birdwatcher’s paradise. Dolphins, sharks and even Bryde’s whales can be spotted rounding the sardines into bait balls before feasting on the silver fish. For visitors, marine encounters like this can be enjoyed from the shore, on a boat or even underwater at one of the KZN South Coast’s top dive sites.

3. Unique photography opportunities

For underwater and wildlife photographers, there’s no time like the Sardine Run to capture that award-winning shot! The Sardine Run provides unparalleled opportunities to photograph dramatic scenes of marine life in action. The scale of this incredible event makes for stunning visuals.

4. See the ‘blue economy’ in action

The Sardine Run is not just a natural spectacle; it’s also an important economic driver for the entire KZN South Coast. Head to the shores to see local anglers netting sardines right from the shore. Sardines are also used in many local dishes, giving tourists on the KZN South Coast the chance to enjoy the full flavour of the Sardine Run.
