Napoleonic Sites
Briars Pavilion
Built in the early 19th century, the Pavilion’s primary use was to house officers of the East India
Company. When Napoleon arrived in 1815, he requested to live there until he moved to Longwood
House.
Opening times: Monday & Friday 10:00am – 11:00am. No booking required.

Longwood House
Originally built to serve as a barn for the Governor at the time, Longwood House was converted to
living accommodation for Napoleon and is now famously known as the place where he spent his final
years. Today, the house can be seen as the closest representation of Napoleon’s former residence on
the day he died in 1821.
Opening times: Monday, Wednesday and Friday 11am – 1pm. No booking required.

The Tomb
The location of The Tomb was chosen by Napoleon during his walks to Sane Valley. Twenty Four
garrison soldiers took it in turns to carry Napoleon’s coffin from the road to The Tomb – the same
path taken by visitors today. The tomb was guarded day and night until 1840 when his remains were
taken back to France as Napoleon had wished.

Historical Town Walks
Lower Jamestown Walk with Cynthia
Cynthia will host you on a guided walk of Lower Jamestown, highlighting the historical buildings and
general points of interest. Meet outside of the Tourist Office.

Historical town walk with French Consul
French Consul, Michel Martineau will host you on a guided tour around Jamestown highlighting its role
in St Helena’s history, pointing out general places of interest.

Plantation House
Built by the East India Company in 1792 as a residence for the island’s governor, Plantation House is
still used as the Governor’s residence today and the grounds are home to the oldest land animal in
the world, Jonathan the 191 year old giant tortoise.
The guided tour of the house comprises a viewing of the downstairs rooms and two rooms upstairs
on the east wing, followed by a visit to the grounds to meet Jonathan. Tea or coffee and cake is served
in the tearoom.

Museum of St Helena
The Museum is located near the foot of Jacob’s Ladder in a beautifully restored late 18th Century
building. You can learn about St Helena’s fascinating history through displays, records and artefacts.
There is a small shop with souvenirs and books about St Helena.
When you’ve completed the climb of Jacob’s Ladder, you can collect a certificate from the Museum.

Wirebird Tour & Millennium Forest Visit
Join the St Helena National Trust on a tour to see St Helena’s endemic Wirebird in their natural
habitat. Following this, visit the Millennium Forest – a conservation project which started in the year
2000 to mark the Millennium. Since the start of the project, over 10,000 Gumwood trees have been
planted. You will also have the opportunity to plant your very own Gumwood tree (additional charge).

Island Tour
The Island wide tour includes visits to the main historical sites and local points of interest which
include Deadwood Plain, The Millennium Forest, Sandy Bay and Sandy Bay Beach, Blue Hill and St
Paul’s areas. Stopping at fortifications such as High Knoll, Ladder Hill and Jacobs Ladder on the return
to Jamestown. Lunch is included.

The Napoleonic Story
The Napoleonic tour includes visits to the Briars Pavilion, Longwood House and the Tomb, (entails
a 1km return walk to the Tomb in Sane Valley). The three properties are owned by the French
Government. Longwood House is one of the best Napoleonic museums in the world, with original
furniture and over 900 artefacts. Lunch and tickets are included.

Hiking
There are 21 Post Box Walks that lead you to places of stunningly varied natural habitats and a
diversity of unique flora and fauna. Walks vary between 1.5km and 12km, lasting from a couple hours
to half a day. Difficulty and terrain types vary from family-friendly to highly challenging.
At the end of each walk is a ‘Post Box’ holding a visitor’s book to leave your name and comments, and
a unique stamp that can be used to stamp your Post Box Walk book.
The ‘Post Box Walks book’ is an essential guide for these hikes and can be purchased from the Tourist
Office, Museum of St Helena or the Arts & Crafts shop. Guided hikes are also available, please enquire
at the Tourist Office.

Wranghams
