Make the most of warmer days and longer evenings at The Peech

Spring in Johannesburg has a particular energy to it. The mornings soften, the afternoons stretch out, and suddenly there is every reason to spend more time outdoors.

At The Peech Hotel in Melrose, the change of season is being marked with a series of new additions that make the most of warmer days and longer evenings. Set across two acres of established gardens, the boutique hotel is introducing new menus, a refreshed wines-by-the-glass offering, extended Monday dinner service at The Pot Luck Club Johannesburg, and a new Garden Bar opening in mid-September.

The result is a summer experience that feels less about escaping the city and more about enjoying it differently.

Recently recognised in the Tripadvisor Travellers’ Choice Awards 2026, placing it among the top 10% of hotels worldwide, The Peech has long been known for its sense of calm. Yet, its Melrose setting keeps guests close to some of Johannesburg’s best-loved neighbourhoods, restaurants, galleries and shops.

That sense of place is matched by a considered approach to responsible tourism. The hotel has invested in an impressive solar power system and its own water supply, alongside a range of initiatives focused on reducing waste, conserving energy and supporting the wider community. These include heat-pump water systems that lower energy consumption and ongoing support for organisations such as Little Eden.

The Peech was also one of the first hotels in Johannesburg to achieve Fair Trade Tourism certification, reinforcing a longstanding commitment to operating more responsibly without compromising the guest experience.

The warmer months simply add more ways to enjoy the location. A morning can begin with a walk or run through nearby James & Ethel Gray Park, followed by breakfast back at the hotel. Guests wanting something more active can head to padel courts a short walk away, while those in the mood for something slower can book a treatment at nearby toast & co. or spend the afternoon by one of The Peech’s two swimming pools.

By late afternoon, attention naturally turns to food and drink.

A new Garden Bar

Opening in mid-September, The Peech’s new Garden Bar is designed to carry the hotel from morning into evening.

Freshly brewed coffee and cold-pressed juices will set the tone earlier in the day, before the space shifts toward sundowners, house-curated cocktails and a selection of South African wines and spirits as the sun drops behind the gardens.

The bar is designed as a fun and welcoming space overlooking the gardens, ultimately creating a new heart in the public area of the hotel, connecting the existing spaces to each other: using tactile natural materials like terracotta, marble and raffia to create a sense of laid-back elegance for which The Peech is renowned.

This will be the perfect spot to enjoy the refreshed wines-by-the-glass list, offering guests the chance to explore local producers and varietals over lunch, drinks or dinner.

New season, new menus

Summer also brings new dishes to both of The Peech’s restaurants:

At The Garden Restaurant, reserved for hotel guests, the menu remains relaxed and seasonal, with contemporary classics and produce-led dishes designed for easy breakfasts, leisurely lunches and uncomplicated dinners overlooking the gardens.

Chef Ebie du Toit has introduced new dishes for the season, including grilled wagyu fillet and West Coast lobster pasta, for those seeking a premium taste of South African produce.

At The Pot Luck Club Johannesburg, the menu retains the restaurant’s signature approach to globally inspired small plates that pack a flavour punch, designed for sharing. New seasonal dishes feature Squid with Fragrant Herb Salad, Vermicelli and Passionfruit Nuoc Cham, Szechuan Fried Chicken with Salt & Pepper Crust and Smashed Cucumber Salad served with Miso & Tofu Emulsion. Single-origin Cheese and a new Raspberry Sorbet with Goat’s Cheese Mousse adorn the dessert menu options.

The Pot Luck Club Johannesburg was named Hotel Restaurant of the Year at the 2026 LUXE Restaurant Awards.

For guests staying at the hotel, there is a particular ease to the arrangement. Dinner is only a short walk through the gardens, and the evening can unfold without any thought of traffic, parking or the journey home.
