East City Grill puts a new spin on the South African dinner

There are few things more South African than gathering around a table with people you love and eating exceedingly well.

East City Grill on Cape Town’s thriving Harrington Street is leaning into that tradition with the launch of its new “Feast for 4” menu: a generous multi-course sharing menu created for exactly four guests and designed to celebrate many of the flavours South Africans know by heart.

Launching in time for Heritage Month, the “Feast for 4” is not a limited-edition September special. It will become a permanent fixture at East City Grill, available for both lunch and dinner going forward.

The veritable feast takes familiar favourites including biltong, vetkoek, snoek, prime beef, roast potatoes, Peppermint Crisp tart and the kind of simple tomato salad that has appeared on family tables for generations, and gives them the inimitable East City Grill treatment.

The result is unmistakably South African, but certainly not predictable.

Priced at R650 per person, or R2 600 for the table of four, the “Feast for 4” follows the philosophy that has defined East City Grill since opening last year: the finest local produce, serious meat, cooking over flame and a fascination with Japanese ingredients and techniques. The premium steakhouse brings together South African heritage and Asian accents, with locally sourced meat, fire-led cooking and specialist Japanese ingredients forming part of its distinctive approach.

For executive chef Jaycee Ferreira, however, the menu is also personal.

“A lot of these dishes take me straight back to the food I grew up eating,” he says. “They remind me of home and of family meals, but we’ve had fun looking at them through the East City Grill lens. The tomato, mint and red onion salad is especially close to me because it’s the kind of salad my Ouma used to make. It’s simple, fresh and exactly what you want alongside a rich piece of beef.

“There’s something special about being able to put those memories onto a restaurant table and share them with other people.”

The first bite sets the tone. Biltong Lamingtons with miso butter take two unlikely ideas and bring them together in one deeply savoury mouthful.

Next comes vetkoek served with snoek pâté and pickled curried sultana jam, playing with familiar Cape flavours and that irresistible balance of salty, sweet, sour and gently spiced.

Up next are deliciously juicy Roast Lamb Potstickers drenched in yakiniku sauce.

Then, a touch of dinner-party nostalgia arrives in the form of a charred prawn and avocado cocktail. Cool, creamy avocado meets sweet prawns touched by the grill in the restaurant’s interpretation of a retro favourite.

The centrepiece, however, is built for a table that takes its beef seriously. A prime fillet of beef is grilled over open flames, wrapped in caul fat and filled with wagyu bone marrow and fresh garden herbs. Rich, smoky and unapologetically indulgent, it arrives with a mountain of crispy roast potatoes and a deeply flavoured beef gravy.

Alongside it comes an abundant spread of side dishes: East City Grill’s special Japanese Koshihikari rice, cinnamon and soy Kuri squash, grilled seasonal greens, and the chopped tomato with fresh mint and red onion salad that Ferreira remembers from his childhood.

It is a main course designed to take over the table. The beef is carved and shared, potatoes are passed around, gravy is spooned liberally and everyone inevitably develops an opinion about who gets the last piece.

This generous, communal style of eating is precisely the point.

East City Grill has always looked at the South African grill through a broader lens. Locally raised meat and familiar flavours meet Japanese ingredients, umami and the restaurant’s love of cooking with fire. The “Feast for 4” allows those influences to come together in a way that feels relaxed, celebratory and particularly fitting for a Heritage Month launch.

Dessert returns firmly to South African nostalgia with East City Grill’s own interpretation of the Peppermint Crisp tart. Ferreira takes the classic apart and rebuilds it from scratch, even hand-making his own version of the familiar Tennis Biscuit. These are layered with amasi, miso caramel and Peppermint Crisp, then finished with shards of dark chocolate to create a dessert that is immediately recognisable, but unmistakably East City Grill.

The tang of the amasi cuts through the sweetness, while the miso gives the caramel a salty, savoury depth and the dark chocolate brings a bittersweet finish. It is nostalgic enough to remind you exactly what you are eating, but considered enough to make a South African classic feel completely new.

And just when dinner appears to be over, smoked yuzu bonbons arrive as the final bite.

The “Feast for 4” is not intended to be a formal tasting menu. It is a proper feast.

While Heritage Month provides the perfect moment to introduce it, the “Feast for 4 “ menu has been conceived as an ongoing part of the East City Grill experience. Groups of four can book the quintessentially South African experience for lunch or dinner throughout the year, making it as suited to a long lunch with friends as it is to a celebratory dinner around the table.

The East City Grill “Feast for 4” menu is priced at R2 600 (R650pp) and is designed for four persons sharing (or increments of 4), and available for lunch and dinner.

Located at 84 Harrington Street, District Six, Cape Town, East City Grill and Yakiniku is open for lunch and dinner, Tuesdays through Saturdays. Book both dining experiences online.
